Hydrogen fuel

Hi and welcome to "Hydrogen fuel" page.

Many companies are currently researching the feasibility of building hydrogen cars. This all in function to decrease the amounts of co2 emissions. Although, the American car companies factories are lately in a deep crisis situation , and will probably cool down every research activities. This in the near future and this situation might last for some time.

Anyway, the Ford Motor Company has already dropped its plans to develop hydrogen cars ,and goes for the production of electrified vehicles. Most of these vehicles are currently only available in demonstration models or in a lease construction. They are not yet available for the public ( because of the testing phase) . To do this testing,in the United States there are about two hundreds cars driving on the public roads ( most of them in the California area).

Hydrogen Fuel cells

Fuel cells are a relatively new technology to produce electricity a cleaner way.A fuel cell is in fact an electrochemical conversion device.

Electricity is produced from fuel on the anode side and an oxidant on the cathode side, which react in the presence of an electrolyte. The reactants flow into the cell, and the reaction products flow out of it, while the electrolyte remains within it. As long as both recipients are available, these fuel cell can produce electricity and so can continue to operate.

The advantage is:

That the conventional batteries store electrical energy chemically in a closed system and electrochemical cell batteries in that they consume reactant, which must be replenished. . While the electrodes within a battery react and change as a battery is used, a fuel cell's electrodes are catalytic and relatively stable. So, this means, less pollution.

Many combinations of fuel and oxidant are possible. A hydrogen cell uses hydrogen as fuel and oxygen (usually from air) as oxidant. Or hydrocarbons and alcohols. Or chlorine and chlorine dioxide.

What more vehicles are test driving or flying on Hydrogen ?

Buses:

Fuel cell Buses are the best vehicles to test drive and to research the performance of hydrogen fuel . The Fuel Cell Bus Club is a global fuel cell bus testing collaboration. For safety purpose, the fuel was first stored in roof mounted tanks , but now incorporating inboard tanks.

One of 10 European cities trialing environmentally friendly hydrogen-fueled buses is London. Here an

Bicycles:

A China based company:"Pearl Hydrogen Power Sources of Shanghai" unveiled a hydrogen bicycle at the 9th China International Exhibition on Gas Technology. We'll wait for more in the 2009 and see what comes from China on the hydrogen fuel front. Here an article
